The Blended Learning course is a hybrid course composed of an online portion and one practical pool-skills session or “Test Day.” The online portion covers traditional classroom learning in seven modules. American Red Cross suggests the online course takes approximately 7 hours to complete. The direct link will be emailed to you promptly after you register for your Test Day.
Test Day covers lifeguard prerequisites, Entries and Approaches, Water Skills (Part 1 & 2), Head, Neck, and Spinal Injuries, Extractions at High Pool Edge, Spinal Back boarding, a timed final Scenario, practical CPR session and the written final (multiple choice).
To PASS and become certified you must be at least 15 years of age by the end of the course, you must have completed the online portion prior to the “TEST DAY,” be present and participate 100% of the time, demonstrate proficiency in all required skills, successfully complete the final skill scenarios and pass the written exam with a minimum grade of 80% on each section. It is your responsibility to read the online manual and study for the final exam. Failure to successfully complete any portion of the course would require you to take the entire course over again to be eligible for certification.
